Intern Program Provisional Psychologists
Provisional psychologists have completed the same university training as fully registered psychologists. They make the same assessments of symptoms, make sense of how they arose and choose an appropriate intervention to support you.
Provisional psychologists meet regularly for rigorous supervision and mentoring with two senior psychologists who are approved by the Psychology Board of Australia and who continue to do extensive professional development each year. This program of experience, supervision, and mentorship adheres to the strict regulations set in place by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with regard to knowledge, method, principles, techniques, and ethical standards.
The only thing provisional psychologists lack, is experience. We all have to start somewhere!
Our interns have been hand selected by our principle psychologist, Louise Johnson, and employed due to their outstanding skills and abilities that we want to invest in and foster to grow. Additionally, we see something special in our provisional practitioners that the community will benefit from.
With the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on community mental health, 4thought psychology is responding by providing additional support to our community through our internship program.
- Provisional psychologists offer you psychological treatment at a significantly reduced cost.
- Provisional psychologists have a smaller case load than registered psychologists, so can spend more time reflecting and planning each client’s treatment and therapy plan.
- Provisional psychologists are more readily available and can offer you a shorter wait time to engagement.
At 4thought, we see the value in having team members with “fresh eyes” on treatment approaches, an eagerness to learn, develop, and invest in expanding and refining therapeutic techniques and approaches.
We are passionate and have strong values in investing into the profession to develop capable and exceptional practitioners to support the community. We believe strongly in rigorous training within our profession with supportive mentoring and skilled senior therapists. We believe in offering reduced fee options to help you reach your treatment goals and support the broader community.
Our whole team thrives on the enthusiasm and curiosity our intern program and provisional psychologists bring with them and create.
You may wish to seek treatment, but cost is an issue. In this case, you may engage with one of our provisional psychologists. Whilst provisional psychologists will liaise closely with your GP, or other health professionals, you will not have to attend or have the cost of attending the GP for Medicare-required mental health reviews including:
- Initial review appointment to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan
- A review appointment after 6 sessions
- A review appointment after a following 4 sessions
Alternately, you may already be seeing a registered psychologist, but may have run out of Medicare rebated sessions, and our provisional psychologist can offset the cost of continuing your treatment until the new calendar year.
Your registered psychologist may have completed their treatment with you and your condition has now stabilized, but they have recommended you see a provisional psychologist to maintain and integrate the life changes achieved in therapy.
